(This is Weathering with You film review, which is a Japanese anime film about rain and romance)
After being known for Your Name, we are once again presented with another of the famed director’s work that deals with extreme weather and romance. Weathering with You is the film that results from those combinations and it does seem to look as good as its predecessors.
The anime film is directed by none other than Makoto Shinkai, and with voice actors and actresses such as Kotairo Daigo, Nana Mori, Shun Oguri and Sakura Kiryu. Let’s jump into the Weathering with You film review below to see if its worth your time!
Premise
When the land of Japan is experiencing an abnormal amount of rainfall, a runaway boy from nearby cities come to Tokyo to earn a living. There, he coincidentally meets up with The Sunshine Girl, who is able to bring sunshine at her whim…though at a price. Will they be willing to pay for that price regardless of the consequences for the greater good?
Weathering with You Film Review
Premise
Plot wise I felt the beginning was very choppy and almost haphazardly stitched together. We were rushing all over the place and it was almost as if I was watching a short film. I almost felt insulted that this was how they chose to release it. However, the film started to feel more cohesive in the latter half which is where the film really shines.
I have to say though……the whole plot structure feels a bit too similar to Your Name??? Maybe it’s just me. It’s not necessarily bad but I felt it did make the film feel a tad bit predictable towards the end. I was still very emotionally moved though, more so than I was for your name actually. This film in a sense is more grounded and so the struggles feel much more real, hence relatable to the audience.

Animation
The animation here. My god. It’s absolutely bloody gorgeous. They do a lot of unnecessary, very throwaway close-ups like rain hitting a puddle on the ground but even that looks so immaculately animated I can only imagine the animators’ immense hatred of Shinkai 🤣.

This film is simply beautiful and it knows it. Also this film takes place in Tokyo and even as an occasional tourist I recognised a lot of locations. I can only imagine how much of a treat this film must be for Tokyolites.
Characters
The characters are overall likable enough but I felt like the characters In Your Name were stronger. We barely get to know any background of the male lead which is whom we see most of the film through so that’s a pretty glaring weakness. The female lead and various side characters ended up being much more compelling and fleshed out. I will say that I think this film is actually much funnier than I thought it would be.

Soundtrack
Music choices were good for the most part but did feel like one or two songs felt like they were there just for the sake of being there and it felt a bit out of place. Your Name is better in this regard.
