Short films have been a genre that gained much traction in these past decades, and many have been created since the coming of YouTube and Vimeo. But among all these, animated short films are still considered a rarer species.
Partly because of the insane amount of time needed to create it, either in 2D or 3D, compared to live action. And Controller Companies is here to introduce to some animated short films that we think is worth your time.
The first is Momochi. You can watch it here.
Momochi is a short film with a mix of 2D and 3D. It is created by a group of Japanese artists and is set in the era of feudal Japan where Samurais and Ninjas coexisted. What’s pretty cool for this is the fact that the starting began with a Japanese brush-painting style and ends with a full on 3D fights. And it’s a tale of the classic revenge.
2nd, we have Beyond Us, which you can watch here.
Beyond Us takes a more apocalyptic tone with its setting and premise. It is also kind of abstract and wishes to teach us something about the bad effects of our lifestyle. What’s impressive is that this features a quality that is unexpected from its poster and materials. I must say I am quite surprised at the animation quality and the sound effects.
Lastly, we have Pour 585, which you can watch here.
Pour 585 is an old school style animation that takes inspiration from older cartoons from the 80s. Heck, some of the scenes are quite similar to old Disney cartoons too! And it even won the Oscar nomination for 2018 animation entry! Truly a feast for the eyes, with some pretty unique character designs too.
