Black Panther (2018) VERSUS REVIEW

There is a lot of hype surrounding this movie and going in I had something I really shouldn’t have had, high expectations. It’s nowhere near the best Marvel has to offer and I just feel like it’s a very alright film. It ain’t a bad film… But I’ve come to expect more than ‘just alright’ from Marvel.

The Prince of Wakanda is being crowned the king when his father died in an explosion during the Civil War movie. With a new responsibility and threat emerging at the same time, could he stop his enemies that not only come from outside but also from within?

Versus Review

Plotwise, it really is nothing we haven’t seen before. They play it really safe and cliched in this film. I will say that the premise itself is interesting, having a king/leader of a country be a superhero and while they did do some things with that idea, they didn’t do nearly enough to keep me interested or excited.

The narrative is pretty much a Hero’s Journey tried and tested formula that works for pretty much any superhero movie and doesn’t really stand out in this department. Though it connects the events from other Marvel movies, it surprisingly doesn’t feature other superheroes other than Agent Ross and someone who only appeared in the Credit Scene #2. All in all, the narrative is just okay for setting up Black Panther storyline.

I have to give special mention to the camera work during the fight scenes as the choreography and the way it was filmed is really sth, one scene, in particular, was a long one take as it kind the camera kind of danced around the scene, panning from one fight to another. It is a technical treat for those who care. The CGI was reasonably well done but… It kind of felt a bit hollow and didn’t really immerse that much tbh.

The action sequences are pretty cool and this film is actually quite unique in the CGI department as well. As this film takes place in Africa, it creates a great special fusion of the cultures with some high-tech stuff that makes this part stands out among other Marvel Movies. Though it does not feature the best action sequences I have seen, it is still remarkable in its own right.

Black Panther Characters
The Main Black Panther Characters

Character-wise, most of the main cast have their distinguished personalities and are actually pretty likable. Most of them have their own little ‘thing’ going on within the main story. Villain wise, I rather like this villain actually. He still suffers from the typical marvel bad villain syndrome but I would say he’s one of the better villains we’ve seen and his backstory is empathetic enough. Makes him seem less one dimensional.

The characters are the main players in this film as we are introduced to a plethora of interesting and no one-dimensional character that forms the backbone of the film. Each of the characters features their own accent and personality and also their history that intertwines with the film. The villain is unique in having a mindset of a hero yet the action of a villain, while the king tries to play it safe but eventually has to accept that he has to make changes in order to save Wakanda and the world from future threats. Also, I love the costumes that they are wearing, seems so retro-african with their own style that can’t be matched by any other Marvel movies.

The soundtrack does suit the film quite a lot due to the heavy emphasis on African melodies and instruments. However, no particular track really grabbed me all that much.

The soundtrack is a mixture of African instruments and songs that I think goes really well with the film, especially in some scenes where they make an impactful moment that fits the scenarios. This is one of the more unique Marvel soundtrack ever!

Does this film deserve the hype?

Overall, this film really plays it way too safe and I’ve really just come to expect more from Marvel. Temper your enthusiasm and take the positive reviews with a pinch of salt. Unfortunately, I feel this film has definitely been overhyped. That being said, this film is nonetheless an important film as it really does give us a strong representation of African culture so it does deserve recognition for that.

Well, this is definitely too overhyped and I don’t think it is as good as what most media articles said it is. Other than for political or racial reason, this film is really just a pretty good decent movie. However, it does cast a spotlight on the African culture that has so far been stereotyped and ignored in many Hollywood films, and I’m glad that Black Panther creates a new image of the African culture for all of us to behold!

Pretty Good!
It's an overhype film but still a pretty good decent superhero film!
With it being the first Black standalone Marvel superhero movie, this film has certainly wowed us with its set design and high production quality. It also manages to impress us with the Afro-futurism design that changes our perspective on the often stereotyped African culture. However, it is still overhyped and you better not get caught into it.
