It’s time to watch some old classics from the 90s, where some of the best films have been made and goes unnoticed at the time of their release. The Shawshank Redemption is one such film, where it’s box office result is not great and almost considered to be disappointing. However, with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins being casted into it, perhaps the movie contains something more than what the audience appreciated. Read on to find out how it looks!

Premise

The basic premise is about Andy Dufresne, a banker who is accused of murdering his wife and her lover. He proclaims innocence but is ignored and is handed two consecutive life sentences in Shawshank Prison. Inside the prison, he meets Red, a contraband smuggler and his group of friends. With such a long life sentences, and knowing himself to be innocent, Andy strives to make it out through his skills in banking. However, hope seems to be fading as time goes by, will he be ever to make it out?

Review

Man oh man, this film contains an absolutely amazingly scripted story that I have ever seen. It’s based on Stephen King’s novella and the story just manages to balance that fragile line of realism and fiction. The theme of having hope is subtly shown through the film events and Andy’s actions. It strives to tell a tale of salvation in the modern context and also about the cruelty of life. Andy’s situation is more common than what we would have thought, especially when Life fucks you up suddenly. Also, I love the way the pacing is handled, giving us depressing moments intercepted with ones that fill us with hope, and the 2 hours that passed seems shorter than it really is.

The wonderful actings of both Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins create two characters who are similar yet vastly different from each other. One retains hope, while the other is slowly losing it. The two characters mesh up well and their interaction with each other and other characters create a sense of family and also unusual lasting friendship. Although the setting is bleak, as it’s set in a prison, the theme of hope is retained from the events that happened. This is a film that simply tells a great story without the need of any strong twist in the ending, and the antagonist is fairly typical as well, but the film world is lively and pretty unique to this type of film.

Dayum!
One of the best films in the 90s era!
With the excellent chemistry between the two lead characters and brilliantly directed narrative, The Shawshank Redemption proves a that a great story could touch the heart of many. This is still one of the best films that could stand the trial of time and enjoyable even by today's standard!
