Sicario: Day of the Soldado Film Review (2018) – Grim Brutal Sequel

(This is the Sicario: Day of the Soldado film review, which is a 2018 sequel film to the 2015’s Sicario)

It is pretty unexpected for 2015’s Sicario to get a sequel, considering that it already ends it story there and is a very good film as well. Regardless, perhaps due to the popularity of the first film, we are now getting a sequel that is sadly not directed by Denis Villeneuve, but rather by Italian director Stefano Sollima. Inside the film is some cast who are returning such as Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin and Jefferey Donovan, as well as some new faces. This film has also faced controversy in its depiction of Muslims and Mexicans. Regardless, let’s see if this film is any good compared to the first one in the Sicario: Day of the Soldado film review below!

When a huge bomb blast in Kansas City is caused by suicide bombing from suspected Islamic terrorists, the Government gives the CIA permissions to cause infighting among the drug cartels in Mexico. They aim to target a daughter of a major kingpin and decides to put her into the rival’s territory to ignite more conflicts. However, things start to go awry when the corrupted Mexican police disrupts their plans. Could the mission be completed successfully? Or would it cause a blow to the CIA itself?

Sicario: Day of the Soldado Film Review

I loved the original sicario and I feel like it is only because the first film was so well received that we are getting this sequel. After watching it I kind of came out questioning whether we really needed a sequel?

Plot-wise, the film has more moving parts than the first film, focusing a lot on Brolin’s team, Benicio the sicario and some cartel people. This film really goes for it and touches on some pretty in my opinion taboo subjects which I will not spoil. But some of the scenes are pretty shocking and I loved that they went for it. It paints a pretty bleak look at its world and how dirty some governments can be. The pacing of this film really drops in the middle and there are honestly quite a few scenes I felt which didn’t really add much to the film. By the time the rather sudden ending rolled around, I was left unsatisfied. It feels like half a plot and they are setting up for more films but it feels like this film doesn’t really stand on its own and is the beginning of something. However, this isn’t the MCU and this film should have been more complete.

Character-wise, I think the acting was fine. We learn more about the relationship between del Toro and Brolin but del Toro gets more character moments as he’s basically the main character in the second half and we also learn more about his backstory. The kid with del Toro also gave a pretty good performance.

The action scenes here are fairly good. They do not shy away from the gore at all. I will say that it kind of feels like they’re copying the tense sequences from the first film a bit and it comes off to me as sort of an imitation rather than its own thing. They are still tense and well shot though.

It’s not a bad film but it really doesn’t feel like it stands as its own film and it begs the question: did sicario even need a sequel?

What's good
Excellent acting from the main cast
Well shot action scenes that do not shy away from the violence
What's bad
Pacing really drops in 2nd half
Does not feel like it stands on its own as a film
It's okay
A not so inspiring sequel!
It really seems that this film is now being milked, as the original Sicario doesn't really need anymore sequel. This film is not a bad film, but it just can't be compared to the original in many areas, except maybe the violence.
