Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) Mini Film Review

The last Jedi does a lot of things right. It gives us a lot of what we want in a star wars film and even some things we didn’t even know we wanted. It is bold, perhaps a little too bold and I can see certain aspects of the film which will divide fans.

With the First Order gaining a massive advantage against the ailing and retreating Resistance Fighters, Rey has to find ways to convince the Jedi Master Luke Skywalker to come to their aid, even as the old man himself is very reluctant to re-enter the war of Light versus Dark. On the other end, the Force seems to try to connect Rey with Kylo Ren in what could be a symbol of change in their destinies. Will the Light or the Dark ever be able to resolve their conflict?

Luke Skywalker will be playing a much bigger role here

In terms of plot, just go into the film blind. That is the best way to experience this and honestly, any other film. Let it surprise you and trust me, this film will surprise and delight you. It is a long film, at 152 mins and I will say this film has a very strong first and third act. The second act, however, falters slightly as one particular storyline felt really slow, to be honest, and while it ultimately joined up nicely at the end with everything else, it did feel very forgettable at the end of the day. Anything else worth discussing ventures into spoiler territory so my lips are sealed.

Characters. Everyone is just fantastic here and I think showed some kind of character growth. Even Luke Skywalker, legendary Jedi master had his own character growth arc, imagine that.
There are also plenty of action sequences in this film and I think is one of the more thrilling star wars movies. They are masterfully choreographed for the smaller, melee sequences and the larger battle sequences are a spectacle to behold.

The cinematography here is truly brilliant and it’s just a very beautiful film even during some of the action scenes.
I feel like the lore of the star wars universe is also explored in unexpected ways here.

Basically, this film tried it’s hardest to subvert all our expectations and I think it succeeded in a lot of ways. This film stands as its own film in a way VII did not. There is honestly so much to discuss but spoilers man. Just go watch it.

What's good
Action scene choreography and cinematography is beautiful while still being thrilling
Almost every character went through some kind of growth
Star Wars mythos boldly explored and expanded upon
What's bad
Pacing in the middle really meanders way too much
Some fans might end up feeling betrayed by certain elements, this film is quite polarizing
Perhaps one of the most polarising Star Wars film ever!
You will either love it or hate it, for this film dares to make many bold changes to the original formula but at the same time paying homage to the old series. You will have to watch it yourself to decide, but in the end, you still have to WATCH IT!
