The Addams Family (2017) Musical Review

Review

The highly anticipated comedy-musical that is perfect for all families. It should resonate with a lot of 90s kids who remember watching the cartoon series on Cartoon Network.

The Dark Family…

The catchy theme song is easily recognisable and hard not clap and sing along. Even if you have not heard of this show, the story is simply relatable. Without going into too many details and spoilers, the musical is almost like a sequel to the series. Wednesday, the only beloved daughter of the Addams, has grown up and fallen in love with a normal boy called Lucas. Like most people preparing to present a potential fiancé/fiancee to the dreaded family meeting of the In-Laws. She struggles getting her family to be Normal for one evening. However when is a family meeting with the Addams ever considered normal?

Personally, I adore Morticia (played by Samantha Womack) the Matriarch of the family. She is amazingly in-character and I love her rendition of the eternal gothic Queen of Darkness as much as I enjoyed the 1991 film played by Anjelica Huston. The casting of all the members are totally spot on with the only exceptions of a slight cliche plotline of family angst that had me cringing at parts where I was forced to acknowledge a grown-up Wednesday that was getting married. (I’m sorry but Wednesday will always be the grim-faced, morbid little 6-year-old girl wielding a crossbow that I love) However, points should be given for the good moral of its story. Quoting one of the songs which probably best represents the motto of the Addams Family which is,

‘It’s Family First and Family Last and Family by and by.’
